Montenegro has been on my travel bucket list for a while, and after spending time exploring this stunning Balkan country, I can confidently say it exceeded all my expectations. From crystal-clear Adriatic waters to towering mountains and vibrant nightlife, Montenegro offers an incredible blend of adventure, history, and relaxation. In this guide, I’ll take you through the best cities to visit, tips for when to go, and recommendations for activities—including tours that you can easily book.
Best Time to Visit Montenegro
The best time to visit Montenegro depends on what you’re looking for:
Summer (June to August): This is perfect for beach lovers. The coastal towns like Budva and Kotor are vibrant, and the weather is ideal for swimming and outdoor fun. Just be aware of the crowds, as it’s the busiest time of year.
Spring (April to May) and Autumn (September to October): If you want warm weather without the crowds, spring and autumn are ideal. You can explore the cities and national parks in comfortable conditions, and prices are generally lower.
Winter (November to March): While the coast slows down in winter, Montenegro’s mountains become a haven for skiing and snowboarding. Head to Durmitor National Park for winter sports.
1. Budva: Beaches, History, and Nightlife
My first stop was Budva, a lively coastal town famous for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. Whether you want to relax by the sea or explore its historic Old Town, Budva offers the perfect mix of fun and culture.
Things to Do in Budva:
Old Town (Stari Grad): The ancient streets and Venetian-style architecture make this a must-see. You can easily spend hours exploring the charming cafes, boutiques, and scenic views.
Mogren Beach: Just a short walk from Old Town, this beach is my top choice for sunbathing and swimming. The water is crystal clear, and the beach is clean and beautiful.
Sveti Stefan: This iconic islet is one of Montenegro’s most photographed locations. Though access to the resort is limited to guests, the views from the nearby beach are stunning.
Nightlife in Budva:
Budva is the nightlife capital of Montenegro. If you’re looking to party, here are my top spots:
Top Hill: This outdoor club on a hill is one of the largest in the Balkans, and the views over Budva are amazing.
Trocadero: Located right on the beach, this club is perfect for dancing to international and local hits late into the night.
Casper Bar: For a more relaxed vibe, I enjoyed Casper Bar’s laid-back setting, good cocktails, and live music.

Paddleboard or Kayak Tour to Coastal Caves: If you love adventure, this 3-hour tour was one of my favorite experiences, with stops at stunning sea caves.
Full-Day Tour to Lovcen National Park & More: This tour combines nature and history, taking you to Lovcen National Park, the Njegusi village, and Cetinje.
Paragliding Experience: Paragliding over the coast was an absolute thrill. The views were spectacular!
2. Podgorica: A Laid-Back Capital with Nature on Its Doorstep
Next, I headed to Podgorica, Montenegro’s capital. While less popular than the coastal towns, Podgorica surprised me with its relaxed vibe and proximity to incredible nature spots.
Things to Do in Podgorica:
Millennium Bridge: A symbol of the city, this modern bridge offers great views over the Morača River.
Ribnica Fortress: For a dose of history, visit these ancient ruins set along the banks of the Ribnica River.
Skadar Lake: Just outside the city, this massive lake is perfect for boat trips, birdwatching, and hiking.
Nightlife in Podgorica:
Buda Bar: Great cocktails in a trendy setting—perfect for a chill night out.
The Living Room Lounge & Pub: This place is ideal for craft beers, live music, and mingling with locals.

Guided Boat Tour to Kom Monastery: This scenic boat tour on Skadar Lake offers a peaceful escape from the city.
Nature Cruise on Lake Skadar with Drinks: For something more relaxed, enjoy a boat cruise around the lake, complete with drinks.
3. Kotor: A Medieval Marvel on the Bay
Kotor is easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. Nestled between towering mountains and the sparkling Bay of Kotor, the medieval town feels like stepping back in time.
Things to Do in Kotor:
Kotor Old Town: I spent hours wandering the narrow, cobblestone streets of Kotor’s Old Town. Every corner has a story, from its medieval churches to its picturesque squares.
Hike to Kotor Fortress: The steep climb to San Giovanni Fortress was tough, but the panoramic view over the bay is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Boat Tours on the Bay of Kotor: You can’t visit Kotor without taking a boat trip to explore the bay. It’s a great way to visit nearby towns and the famous Our Lady of the Rocks islet.

Maximus: A massive club built into the old city walls, it’s one of the best nightlife spots in Kotor.
Old Winery Wine Bar: This cozy wine bar was perfect for a relaxed evening of local wine and live music.
